Making HomeMade Flat Bread.  It’s Super Easy and Fun

Having friends over for a movie night and still thinking about what healthy snack to prepare for them? I have something very simple and super versatile for you – homemade flatbread. I’m not kidding you. Look how versatile it is – you can use it for wraps, to eat with soups and curries or with dips.

Another thing about flatbread is that they are becoming quite popular exactly because of this fact that you can use them with many different dishes. However, while talking with my friends, I figured out that there are some mindful souls there concerned with the quality of the flatbread they can get in supermarkets. As always, there is this question – what the hell is inside this? That is why homemade food should always be your first choice.

Make Mind-Blowing Wraps With This Homemade Flatbread

For this particular recipe, I like to use spelt flour, white one because I want my bread to be white. The next important ingredient that will not only give a nice flavour but will also make the dough smooth is olive oil. And of course, salt – be generous with it.

Before you even start making the dough, have your BBQ plate prepared. If you don’t have it, you can also have a large pan on top of the stove and use it as a hot plate. Another thing you need is boiling water.

Making dough is easy, you just combine flour and water and that’s it. Well, it’s the same here but you will need to be a bit more careful when it comes to the point when you need to add boiling water to the flour, olive oil and salt. What you are aiming at here is smooth, gentle dough, not hard dough and not batter. What this means is that you need to add boiling water gradually. Add a little at a time and stir with your spatula since it will be very hot. When the mixture turns into a soft and gentle dough, tip it over onto a floured surface and knead. This will take at least two minutes. Kneading techniques are important here, so go back to the video to be sure you are doing it the right way. Or I would be glad to see you in our online cooking classes where we teach all of this stuff.

I always say it’s good to engage kids in preparing food, but you may want to skip it this time because the dough is hot and you know kids, they are usually clumsy and want to touch things even when you tell them not to.

Anyway, when the dough is ready, divide it into equal portions and start rolling it out to make it very flat. Again, to make it super flat, take a look at the video and try to do the same I’m doing there.

Carefully place your flatbread on the hot plate and leave it to bubble. This is what you want. The steaming hot plate will shock the bread and make it bubble. When it is all bubbly, flip it over and allow to cook on the other side as well.

Prepare Salads, Nut Butters… Flatbreads Are Ready!

When you have your homemade flatbreads ready, you can go crazy. The simplest way to go is have a bunch of sliced veggies – cucumbers, tomatoes, capsicum, cabbage, lettuce, spring onions, carrots, maybe even fresh herbs and tempeh. Lay your favourites on a wrap, drizzle generously with homemade mayo (check out my recipe here), fold it and eat immediately.

You can go into another direction as well, and this is something my lovely husband Scott likes to do. Listen to this, he would spread nut butter over this homemade flatbread (and he would not skimp on it), drizzle this with honey and then fold it. Oh, I remember he once added banana slices to this – it was fuc*ing delicious. Try it out.
