For all the parents out there, here comes a quick and simple recipe that will nourish your kids and give them that rich chocolate flavour that they crave for. They are just perfect as a healthy snack when your kids come rushing from school (check out more ideas on healthy afterschool snacks here). You can take them to work as well when you feel like you need something sweet to survive a busy day.
Now when I come to think about this recipe, these super seed balls can actually be very good in colon cleansing. Just look at the ingredients – you will need to get some super seeds such as hemp seeds, flax seeds, and psyllium husks. All of them are very good sources of fibre and will help flush out everything that has accumulated there.
For that chocolate flavour, you will need to use pure cacao paste and cacao powder. If you cannot find cacao paste in your local store, don’t compromise and use something else as a replacement. Cacao paste is a real deal and you can find it in any wholefood store. To bring out that chocolate glory, you’ll have to add just a bit of cinnamon to this as well.
Now we need to think about healthy ingredients that will add some texture to these super seed balls. I chose oats, shredded coconut and dried currants. If you are not a fan of dried currants, you can use sultanas or prunes.
Important ingredients that will keep all these stick together are tahini and almond butter. Plus, these two will also enrich your chocolate super seed balls with awesome plant fats. Almond butter will also give that nut kick to the whole composition. If you have some almonds and no almond butter, check out my post on how to make your own homemade nut butter.
All of this can now be added to your food processor, but don’t forget that key ingredient we always add when we prepare wholefood meals. Yes, it’s salt. It brings out all the glorious flavours from other ingredients and it also serves to carry nutrients through our bodies.
So, start processing this until the ingredients get grainy. This is the moment when you need to taste and add honey or maple syrup. You can get kids help you decide as well. As you can see, the ingredients are not coming together yet, so add just a splash of water to help everything stick together. Whizz it again until you get a sticky mixture.
The mixture smells so nice that you will start salivating the moment you pop it out of your food processor. You can gather the kids to help you out rolling the mixture into small balls. Make small, bite-size super seed balls – they look so cute and the mixture of flavours is epic! And when you roll them into shredded coconut, they are just adorable! Eat straight away or store them in an airtight container in the fridge.
